The 17 points of Vásárhely
26 October, 1956
“If the storms of fate blow us away...
God will no longer have any Hungarians!”
Our demands:
1. Humane rights of freedom, that is, a life free from fear.
2. The right of assembly, procession, protest, and to strike.
3. Freedom of the press.
4. More humane rights of livelihood, higher standard of living, higher wages and lower prices.
5. Abolishment of wage norms.
6. Introduction of six-hour working days.
7. Free practice of religion, the abolishment of the state religious office and the release of Cardinal Mindszenthy.
8. Free elections with general, fair and secret ballot, with the participation of different parties.
9. The immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Hungary, and the withdrawal of Hungary from the Warsaw Pact.
10. Institute proceedings against Mátyás Rákosi.
11. Bring those responsible for the spilling of citizens’ blood to justice
12. Abolish the practice of the Russian language being a compulsory subject for students and rewrite textbooks in the spirit of the Hungarian nation.
13. Free retail trade and free small industry.
14. Reduction of heavy tax burdens, abolition of compulsory delivery to the state.
15. Free agriculture, without the insistence on collective management
16. Return of nationalised houses.
17. Return of withdrawn payments and pensions to all those deserving it.
