József Nagy (1927 - 1994)
Director of photography. Born in Hódmezővásárhely. Saw the film Tiszavirág, directed by Géza Bolváry, based on a work by Lajos Bibó and starring Árpád Lehotay, in Mártély as a child, which led to a life in film. Studied at the filmatography department at a Gertler-type film school in 1946, and then was assistant beside Géza Radványi at the Hunnia film studio. Was a member of the Association of Hungarian Film Artists from 1949 onwards. He carried out his studies at the film operator department at Színház- és Filmművészeti Főiskola between 1947 and 1953. He ended up at the Budapest Film Studio in 1952, working at the News and Documentary film factory between 1952 and 1957. He primarily prepared news, educational and documentary films. Joined Magyar Televízió as a director of photography in 1957, later becoming leading-, and then head-director of photography. He prepared, along with a few colleagues, the first on-location broadcasts, colour broadcasts, and TV comedies, laid the foundations of the bases for this kind of program during the golden age of Hungarian TV. He made some 160 TV films, 600 portraits-, documentary-, and cultural films.
