József Gyulai   
Gyulai József (1933 - )

Physicist. Born in Hódmezővásárhely. Graduated from Bethlen Gábor Gimnázium, and following his studies at the University of Szeged, as the school’s young physics teacher (1955-1956) stood with his students during the turmoil of 1956. During his Szeged physicist years he began semiconductor research at KFKI (1957-1970). Work at Csillebérc followed, where József Gyulai laid the foundations for ion implantation research and ion-radiating analytics between 1970 and 1991. From 1992 until the present day he has worked on laying the foundations for Hungarian material science research and culture, first at the Material Science Research Institute, then as founding director of the Technical Physical and Material Science Research Institute. Meanwhile, since 1984 he has carried out work in the teaching of modern material science, as a professor at the Budapest Technical University, then as head of the Experimental Physics Department (1989-1998). Honorary citizen of Hódmezővásárhely. Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences since 1990. Winner of the Széchenyi Award in 1993.
