János Benyhe
János Benyhe(1926 - )

Born in Hódmezővásárhely in 1926. He studied at Eötvös Kollégium as well as the Faculty of Arts and Letters at ELTE University in Budapest, receiving a grammar-school teacher’s certificate in English and French language and literature. He also studied music. His literary translating, essay writing, literature- and cultural history work was aimed towards Spanish, Portuguese and French language world literature and the domestic teaching of culture. As a university lecturer he focused on Spanish language literature, and more recently the teaching of literary translation theory and practice. His most recent works primarily discuss questions of Hungarian language and national consciousness, and more generally the opportunities of cultivating modern community awareness. After decades working as editor and chief editor at the publishing houses Európa Könyvkiadó and Corvina Kiadó in Budapest he undertook the renewed diplomatic service of a country reborn. Between 1990 and 1995 he was Hungarian ambassador to Brazil. He has never been affiliated to a political party, but is a member of the leadership of the Hungarian Writers’ Association and the Hungarian-Brazilian club.
