Ilona Banga (1906 - 1998)

Biochemist and geriatrician. Born in Hódmezővásárhely, studied between 1924 and 1930 at the Department of Natural Sciences at Szeged University, the Faculty of Philosophy at Vienna University, and then in Debrecen. Acquired her doctorate in 1929, then, between 1930 and 1945 was assistant at the Medical Chemical Institute at Szeged University, later becoming teacher’s assistant. She took part in the research of vitamin C as a colleague of Albert Szentgyörgyi. At the time of the fall of Szeged ant the Soviet invasion she successfully saved the equipment of the world-famous Medical Chemical Institute. From 1945 she worked at the university in Budapest where until 1947 she taught at the Biochemistry Institute, then becoming lecturer at the Pathology and Experimental Cancer Research Institute, and departmental- group leader. She led the Biochemistry Laboratory at the Institute until 1970. In retirement she was scientific advisor for the geriatrics research group until 1986. She participated in the process of establishing wholesale ascorbic acid (from Szeged paprika). In 1948 she and her husband jointly discovered a new enzyme in the human and the animal pancreas, elastase, and the elastase inhibitor in the blood. These were a pioneering feature of research into muscle-contracting proteins; dealing with the biochemical processes of aging.
