Endre Várhelyi (1924 - 1979)
Theatre director, opera singer. Born in Hódmezővásárhely. Completed his school studies at Bethlen Gábor Református Gimnázium in 1942, and then became a student at the Music Academy. Joined the front theatre in 1944. He was assigned to the levente military groups being led into Germany in 1944. Successfully escaped and was hidden in Bicske by people from Vásárhely, luckily making it home after the fall of the front.
He established the town’s first independent theatre in June 1945 – the Szakszervezeti Ifjúsági Színház –, the majority of whose members comprised of art-lovers. A few months later Béla Osváth took over the directorship, but the director's work was also carried out by Várhelyi. He moved to Budapest in autumn 1946, continuing his studies at the Music Academy but also taking on theatrical roles. Was first a scholarship student at the Opera, then from 1947 a bass-profundo and regular member of Dalszínház. Made many guest appearances in Germany, Finland and the USA.
